Transmission Adaptation Reset / Shift Relearn

After transmission service, valve body work, or battery disconnect on some vehicles, shift adaptations stored in the TCM cause harsh or flare shifts until a relearn is performed.

After transmission service, valve body work, or battery disconnect on some vehicles, shift adaptations stored in the TCM cause harsh or flare shifts until a relearn is performed.

Systems involved

  • Transmission control module
  • Shift solenoids
  • Torque converter

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Ensure ATF level and condition are correct before resetting adaptations.
  2. Connect TOPDON full-system scanner and access Transmission / Gearbox service menu.
  3. Select Reset Adaptations / Shift Relearn / EOL Learn where available.
  4. Some vehicles require a drive cycle with specified shift points; others reset with ignition cycle.
  5. Drive gently for the first 20–30 miles so the TCM relearns shift pressures.
  6. Verify P0730 or harsh shift complaints improved after relearn.

Important warnings

  • Resetting adaptations on a failing transmission will not fix mechanical wear — address fluid and faults first.
  • Not all TOPDON models expose transmission relearn for every make — verify menu for your vehicle.
