After alignment, battery disconnect, or steering component work, the stability control system may need a steering angle sensor reset. A warning light or ESC fault often appears until calibration is done.
Systems involved
- Steering angle sensor
- ESP/ESC
- ABS
Step-by-step procedure
- Ensure the steering wheel is centered and the vehicle is on level ground with wheels pointed straight.
- Connect the TOPDON scanner and access the SAS / Steering Angle Calibration menu.
- Select your vehicle and follow prompts — some models require a slow steering wheel sweep lock-to-lock.
- Clear any stored fault codes related to the steering angle sensor after calibration completes.
- Turn ignition off, wait 10 seconds, and restart to confirm the ESC/ABS warning cleared.
- Perform a short test drive — verify stability control does not trigger unexpectedly during gentle turns.
Important warnings
- Incorrect SAS calibration can cause false stability control intervention — do not skip the centering step.
- If calibration fails repeatedly, inspect the clock spring and sensor wiring before replacing parts.
